Electrical Contracting Specialties
Power Distribution
Extending power within an industrial facility or a building to establish power panels for groups of equipment is an everyday job for Hey. This is done primarily at the 480V 3-phase or lower voltage level, but Hey is comfortable distributing medium voltage.
Motor Control
This is also an everyday service for the Company. Most of its clients use motors of all sizes to operate. Controls can be as simple as a start/stop station, but in some cases, very complex systems are needed – such as with distributive controls utilizing programmable logic controllers and/or variable frequency drives.
Telecommunications Cabling & Design / Fiber Optic & Computer Cabling / Local Area Networks
Hey began performing telecom projects in the early 1990’s - when fiber-optic networks in industrial plants were just starting to be advantageous. At present, Hey has several employees who specialize in fiber optic installations, and also copper data, voice, video and wireless installations. LAN Networks (as opposed to wide area networks or WANs) are the Company’s specialty because these are housed within the clients’ facilities. Hey possesses all the necessary telecom expertise to assist its clients with their ever-increasing telecom needs.
Aerial and Underground Lines
Hey owns two auger trucks and many different sizes of bucket trucks. The Company also has trenchers and access to mini-excavators and operators for underground work. This work is usually done within the confines of a client’s facility, and not so much outside where right-of-way and natural barriers become more of an issue.
Cable Tray Systems
As conduit pricing continues to increase, cable tray systems have become more prevalent. The Company has direct lines for purchasing and delivery of many types of cable tray – including aluminum ladder trays, galvanized solid bottom steel trays, stainless steel trays and fiberglass cable tray systems. More recently basket-type cable trays and some other specialty trays have become more available, and Hey is very adept at these types of installations, as well.
Medium Voltage Systems
Hey installs new and replacement wiring, transformers, controls, switches, arrestors, and other associated devices required for medium voltage systems (above 600V). The Company has electrical engineers on staff who possess this expertise - one of whom designed medium voltage lines for two power companies before becoming a Hey Partner. Hey has also installed 135-kV high lines and is very familiar with medium-voltage installations on poles and towers, and in cable tray, conduit and underground to meet the needs of its clients.
Preventative Maintenance and Trouble Shooting
Several clients use Hey on an ongoing basis (two or more employees are stationed in the client’s facility on a full-time basis) to perform regular maintenance and the client’s project-driven electrical, instrumentation and telecommunication work. One client (a chemical plant) has had Hey employees at its facility doing maintenance and project work since 1984. The crew at this plant has never been less than two electricians, and for a few larger projects, there have been as many as thirty electricians on-site for months. The Company has similar arrangements with other industrial clients.
Design / Build Projects
Hey has drafting and design capabilities available and has partnered many times with Professional Engineers to complete design/build electrical installations for our clients.
Automation Projects
The increased use of variable frequency drives with alternating current motors for process speed control as well as the widespread use of electronic instrumentation, robotics, ethernet and computer process controls for industry, has fostered many automation projects to control large industrial machinery. Hey has been involved in large numbers of these automation projects for its clients.
Indoor / Outdoor Lighting
The Company has been active in this ever-changing area of our industry since our inception. Lighting has seen the evolution from incandescent lights, to quartz lights, to high-intensity discharge (HID) lights that evolved from mercury vapor lights, to high and low-pressure sodium lights, to metal halide lights. At present, Hey is designing and installing LED lighting projects for its clients almost exclusively.
Electronic Instrumentations / DCS
Hey has been wiring electronic instrumentation for decades. Hey has developed significant expertise in this type of work and has employees who are certified to install, calibrate and wire electronic instrumentation devices.
Explosion Proof & Harsh Environment Installs
The Company has been active in the refineries of Western Pennsylvania for years and is very knowledgeable concerning electrical installations within hazardous locations as defined in the National Electric Code (NEC) Article 500. Having worked in a number of chemical plants and steel mills, Hey is also very experienced in handling corrosive area installations. The Company has specialized tools and equipment for quick installation of all types of rigid galvanized, threaded steel conduit systems. This includes the installation of PVC coated rigid steel conduit and cable tray as well as aluminum and stainless steel conduit and cable tray systems. Hey has worked with all NEMA types of electrical enclosures.
Water & Sewage Treatment Plants
Hey has been performing private construction and maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities for its clients for 40+ years. In addition, the Company services many of the local municipal sewage treatment plants.
Electric Heat Tracing
Hey began installing electric pipeline heat tape or tracing for its clients when self-regulating tracing was first introduced in the late 1970s. Since then, the Company has done a large number of projects - with self-regulating tracing, mineral insulated tracing and many other types of constant wattage pipeline tracings.
UPS and Power Quality Installations
Uninterruptable Power Systems (UPS) and power quality installations have become necessary in large part because of the computer revolution. Industrial clients can no longer tolerate power blips or voltage fluctuations. Hey has wired a number of data centers of all sizes and complexity.
Service Consolidations & Voltage Conversions / Upgrades
As the loads increase in a facility, the clients generally come to a point where it is cost-effective to be served with a higher voltage from the power company - from 240V to 480V, 480v to 5kV, 5kV to 15kV, and 25kV and up. Hey has done many of these kinds of projects for its industrial clients.
Budget Estimates / Power Usage Surveys
Because of its strong client relationships, Hey is very familiar with its clients’ facilities' electrical systems - in many cases more so than the client’s employees. It is not uncommon to be asked for electrical budget estimates or power usage surveys for future projects. Hey can assist clients with anticipated increased electrical needs and provide plans to upgrade as needed.
Unit Outage & Turnaround Work
As a signatory to the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) Union since 1984, Hey is able to access a large highly trained force of electricians which is needed sometimes when a large amount of work needs to be done in a short amount of down-time at an industrial facility. The Company has had as many as 120 electricians at a single unit for the work required during an outage or turnaround that may require multiple shifts for days or weeks.
